1. Our Commitment
Bear Market News is committed to the highest standards of journalistic integrity. Our editorial policy sets out the principles and practices that guide every piece of content we publish. We hold ourselves accountable to our readers and welcome feedback on our work.
2. Core Principles
- Accuracy: We verify facts before publication. Every statistic, date, name and claim in our articles is traced back to a primary or authoritative secondary source.
- Independence: Editorial decisions are made independently of commercial interests. Advertisers, sponsors and partners have no influence over what we cover or how we cover it.
- Fairness: We present multiple perspectives on contested issues and give individuals and organisations a fair opportunity to respond to claims made about them.
- Transparency: We disclose our sources, methods and any potential conflicts of interest. When we make mistakes, we correct them promptly and prominently.
- Accountability: Every article carries a byline. Our editors are reachable by email. We publish corrections and clarifications where warranted.
3. Fact-Checking Protocol
Every article published on Bear Market News goes through the following fact-checking process:
- Author Verification: The author is responsible for verifying all factual claims against primary or authoritative secondary sources before submitting a draft. At least two independent sources are required for key factual assertions.
- Editorial Review: The section editor reviews the draft and spot-checks a random sample of claims against cited sources. If discrepancies are found, the article is returned to the author for correction.
- Pre-Publication Check: A final review is conducted by a second editor or the Editor-in-Chief before publication. This includes checking headlines, captions, data visualisations and embedded media for accuracy.
- Post-Publication Monitoring: Readers can report errors to [email protected]. All reported errors are investigated within one business day.
4. Sourcing Standards
We categorise sources as follows:
- Primary Sources: Official data releases, regulatory filings (SEC, CSA, OSC), company earnings reports, on-chain blockchain data, peer-reviewed academic research, court documents, recorded interviews conducted by Bear Market News
- Secondary Sources: Reputable news organisations (Reuters, Bloomberg, AP, The Globe and Mail, CBC), industry reports from established research firms, verified social media accounts of official organisations
- Unattributed Sources: Anonymous sources are used only in exceptional circumstances, with the approval of the Editor-in-Chief, and only when the information cannot be obtained through attributable sources and serves a clear public interest
We do not cite other news articles as sole sources for factual claims without independent verification. We do not use Wikipedia as a primary source.
5. Corrections Policy
When we discover an error in a published article, we take the following steps:
- Correction Note: A prominent correction note is added to the top of the article, clearly stating what was wrong and what the correct information is. The note includes the date of correction.
- Severity Assessment: For significant errors that may have affected reader understanding or decisions, we may also publish a standalone correction notice on our homepage and in our newsletter.
- Social Media: If the erroneous article was promoted on social media, we publish a correction on the same platforms.
- Retraction: In rare cases where an article is fundamentally flawed, we retract it entirely with an explanation.
6. Opinion vs. News Labelling
We clearly distinguish between:
- News and Analysis: Fact-based reporting, labelled as “News” or “Analysis.” Opinions are not presented as facts.
- Opinion and Commentary: Articles expressing the author’s views, labelled as “Opinion,” “Commentary” or “Op-Ed.” These reflect the author’s perspective, not necessarily the views of Bear Market News.
- Sponsored Content: Paid content, clearly labelled as “Sponsored,” “Partner Content” or “Advertisement.” Such content is produced separately from editorial content and is subject to review by our commercial team, not the editorial team.
7. Conflicts of Interest
All editorial staff and regular contributors are required to disclose:
- Direct holdings in individual stocks, cryptocurrencies or other tradeable assets
- Employment, consulting or advisory relationships with companies or organisations in sectors we cover
- Family or close personal relationships that could create a real or perceived conflict
Material conflicts are disclosed within the relevant article. Staff members are prohibited from trading on material non-public information obtained in the course of their work.
8. Independence from Advertisers
Editorial content is produced entirely independently of advertising and commercial relationships. Specifically:
- Advertisers do not review, approve or influence editorial content before publication
- Editorial staff are not involved in selling advertising or sponsorships
- Sponsored content is produced by a separate team and is clearly distinguished from editorial content
- We do not accept payment or consideration in exchange for coverage, favourable reviews or suppression of negative information
9. Diversity of Sources
We are committed to seeking diverse perspectives in our reporting. We strive to include voices from underrepresented groups in technology and finance, including women, people of colour and professionals from outside the traditional centres of Silicon Valley and Wall Street.
10. Use of AI
Bear Market News does not publish articles written by artificial intelligence. AI tools may be used for research assistance, data analysis and grammar checking, but every published sentence is written, reviewed and approved by a human editor. We believe readers deserve content produced by journalists who are accountable for their work.
11. Reader Complaints
If you believe we have violated our editorial standards, please contact the Editor-in-Chief at [email protected]. We take all complaints seriously and will respond within five business days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may escalate your complaint to the Canadian Association of Journalists or the National NewsMedia Council.
